By Niall Roche When most people think of low carb diets they automatically think Atkins. For obvious reasons. Dr. Robert Atkins formulated the original low carb diet in 1972 and was met a with a hail of ridicule and negativity from the medical community at large. The Atkins Diet, since renamed to the Atkins Nutritional Approach, works on a very simple principle. Carbohydrates are what our body normally use to produce energy. If you restrict the carbohydrate intake of a normal person their metabolism changes. Changes? Yes your body looks to the next available energy source which is....fat. So now instead of burning carbohydrates for energy your body does the same thing with your existing fat deposits. In a low carbohydrate diet you actually increase your intake of fat and pure protein as opposed to reducing it. In theory the more fat you eat the more fat you burn because your body is now using fat for energy. It's common to see low carb dieters eating enormous steaks smothered in butter with fried eggs and mushrooms on the side. A very high fat meal but also a perfect low carbohydrate meal. The fat burning process is called lipolysis. As the fat is being broken down for energy a secondary phase called ketosis occurs. Ketones are the fragments of fat being broken down in the process of lipolysis hence the name ketosis. Ketosis has a single nasty side effect -bad breath. For whatever biological reason the conversion of fat to energy can lead to really, really bad breath. This is a common complaint amongst followers of Atkins and similar low carbohydrate diets. Amongst some of the bad press that low carb diets receive are worrying stories of people dying while on a low carb diet. These hyped up media tales are tied to one word - ketoacidosis. This particular condition occurs when a person goes on a zero carbohydrate diet and/or suffers from diabetes. During the ketosis phase the blood becomes overly acidic to a critical point. Coma and death can follow quickly if medical attention is not immediately sought. Does everybody following a low carb diet run the risk of ketoacidosis? Not unless you have a history of diabetes (diagnosed or undiagnosed) and you also totally eliminate carbohydrates from your diet. Even then only a small number of people are actually susceptible to the effects of ketoacidosis when compared to the general population. The results that low carb diets produce are hard to argue with. Rapid weight loss in a short space of time whilst on a high fat, high protein diet. These results fly in the face of conventional medical wisdom and serve to constantly annoy the established medical community. Low carb dieting is not going to disappear any time soon. Especially not as long as major Hollywood celebrities are successfully using Atkins and showing off their results to the world media. How Much Time Does Homeschooling Require
By Christopher Byrnes You just spent eight hours making reports, filing papers, fielding phone calls, and placating your boss at the office. When you get home, do you rest? Not really. There's a dinner to prepare, stories to share with your husband, and doing homework with the kids. Such a scenario is and will still be typical among working mothers, who balance the countless demands of career and home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The problem with this is that the children are the ones who are always at the losing end. Why? Because with parents, especially mothers, who are always busy with their work, they tend to take their children for granted especially on the aspect of education. They have this propensity to submit their children to school and believe that the institution could provide the best education for their children. However, in today's changing world, some parents realize that sending their children to school is no longer the best way in providing them the education that their children need. That's why they have opted for home schooling in order to give their children the kind of learning that they want for their children. In home schooling, most parents devote their time and try to provide their children the best education at home. They know that they are the ones who can provide the appropriate teaching approach for their children because they know their children best. However, it does not necessarily mean that parents should devote more time to home schooling than they would do with their other chores at home. It is true that home schooling needs time in order to come up with the best teaching approach that your children need. It is also through a committed schedule that you can identify the appropriate tactics that you need to employ in order to teach your children well. But it does not mean that you have to give your whole time to teaching your children through home schooling programs. On its basic concept, home schooling uses the one-to-one teaching method; hence, it needs lesser time compared to the typical classroom setting. This is because with a more individualistic approach in teaching, most children would be able to grasp the concept easier and faster. Then again, the amount of time to be allotted in home schooling will still vary depending on the many factors that may affect the progress of the teaching process. Here is a list of some factors that should be considered in order to devise the proper amount of time needed in home schooling: 1. Learning style of the children There are instances wherein the children's learning style might affect the time requirement in home schooling. For instance, if your child can learn things at a much faster rate, then you only have to devote lesser time. However, if your child needs more time to grasp things that are being taught to him, then you have to devote more time in explaining to him or her the concept of the subject matter you are teaching. 2. The type of methods used There are various teaching methods available for home schooling. Each has its own teaching approach; hence, they may vary on the time needed for the parents to devote on each program. 3. The number of children within the family Just like in a typical classroom setting, where the number of students is generally bigger, having many children in the family would mean longer hours of teaching. This is because you have to incorporate in students what the subject matter is all about, and if one of them could not yet understand the idea, then you really have to explain the concept all over again. 4. The age of the child The younger the child, the more time that is needed in home schooling. This is because younger children have the tendency to grasp the things being taught at a much slower pace compared to those who are already at higher levels. On its total view, the time needed to commit in home schooling may be affected with these factors but the important thing is to have quality time for your children or students. It is not a matter of how much time you can devote in home schooling but more on how you have provided the time in teaching your children. FREE comprehensive guide to homeschooling. The Top Rated Diet
By Joshua Carson Am I on the 'Top Diet'? What exactly is the top diet? Is it the newest fad diet? Is it the one that has been around for the longest? Is it the most expensive diet? If so, I could probably invent something. All that I really have to do is focus on fats, carbs, protein, or calories. I have as good a chance as any that if you were to choose any of those that youd probably lose some weight. Hey I have an idea. How about a low water diet. I guarantee that will work. Think about it, If you were to limit your water, or eliminate it altogether, I guarantee that you would lose weight. (For those of you who are thinking about it, that was a joke.) Do NOT try this at home! To continue on... If we were to eliminate water our bodies would have no choice but to lose weight right? We might die but it was a success. And in this day and age that is all that matters. There probably is a top diet. My guess is that it would be eating right, exercising daily, and adding some supplements to your diet. Or I could say the new Low Water diet, Lose up to 25 lbs. in 10 days guaranteed, or your money back. I wouldnt have to worry about any returns if they are dead right. The point I am getting at is I think that the more outlandish the claim some of these companies make the more people want them to work. Id love to lose 25 lbs or even gain 25 lbs of muscle in a month for that matter. Yes through proper diet and a little bit of science anyone can lose weight and or gain muscle if you want. Ive had clients do both. I have had people lose 6 pounds in a week. Rare but it does happen. You get out of it what you put into it. I could probably lose weight on any diet. But losing weight is only half of the battle. Have you ever seen someone who has had surgery for weight loss? Yes they are now carrying around less weight, however look at their skin. It sorta just hangs there. Beyond all of that did we eliminate the problem? NO. What you need is a set of rules to follow. Did you ever meet the employee who really isnt any good unless he or she is told what to do? I have. This is sorta the same thing. If I dont have any background in a particular subject, im gonna find a book and listen to their advice. So in order to successfully battle weight gain you need some knowledge. You need a solution to the problem. For a more in depth look at the solution to weight gain, and dieting, feel free to visit my web page at http://www.thermoloss3-diet.com So again if you have surgery you simply removed the effect. What about the cause. How are you going to handle this same problem next time? Knowledge is about fixing the problem and more importantly the cause of that problem. I recently ran into an old friend of mine. His wife was very curious about the book that I wrote since it dealt with rules to weight loss. I told her let me give you a copy of the book. Now I outlined a few chapters of the book and I said if there is anything in this book that I want you to remember and incorporate into your workouts, follow these. She finished the book in about one week. I ran into her about 2 1/2 weeks later. By that time she had already lost 3 1/2 pounds. You say not bad. But did I mention that she was in her sixties! Now it took her a week to finish the book and she immediately put these fat loss secrets to work and within a week and a half, she lost 3 1/2 pounds. Yes our metabolism does slow down around the age of 30. But if you listen to what science has taught us anyone can lose weight. If that is what you commit yourself to do. Making More With Existing Clients
By Charlie Cook Have you ever put on a jacket you havent worn in a while and found a twenty-dollar bill in one of the pockets? You'd forgotten all about it, so discovering it is like getting a gift. If you've been in business for a year or longer, you may have gifts in forgotten pockets sources of additional revenue waiting to be discovered and tapped. There are four ways to increase your net profits: reduce costs, increase prices, attract more clients or sell more to existing clients. When you consider that it costs you at least 60% and as much as 600% more to sell to a new client than to an existing one, it's clear that your best prospects are existing clients. Are you selling as many of your services or products as you could to your existing client base? Could you increase your revenue by doing a better job of marketing to your existing clients? You've established your credibility and the value of at least one of your services with existing clients. They made a commitment to work with you at least once. How can you leverage this trust and client satisfaction into additional sales? Tony called me from Washington D.C. with just this problem.
He is an image consultant to politicians and corporate executives and struggling to increase his revenue. His new clients are happy with his services, but the engagements rarely extend beyond the initial contracted project. He is having a tough time getting repeat business. Tony knows his existing and past clients represent additional revenue but he doesnt know how to mine it. Once you have a client, what's the best way to sell them more of your products or services? The biggest mistake that most small business owners make is to think that after they've competed the initial sale, their marketing job is completed. The opposite is true. Once you've made your first sale to a client and secured a commitment from them with a payment, you should begin your marketing effort to get them to buy again. Of course, you don't want to constantly be "selling" to clients. That would get tedious for you and your customers and they'd be unlikely to want to maintain the relationship. Instead, continue to educate them about their areas of need and how you help clients. Use your products and services to provide value and to educate clients so they can discover what they need and want, even if they've n.ever thought about it before. For example, I've been working with a sports trainer to complete my recovery from shoulder surgery. In our first session he showed me which muscles needed to be reprogrammed with exercise to return to normal functioning. The obvious conclusion of his explanation was that I needed to work with him again to achieve my goals. Just by sharing a little knowledge he successfully extended the project. This approach isnt clever or devious; it is based on the notion that an informed buyer an educated consumer is your best client. Here's how it works in practice: 1. Help Prospects Become Clients by Focusing on their Problems People buy solutions to problems or needs that they know exist. Get your prospects' attention by focusing your marketing message on the problem(s) you solve in order to get them to visit your web site or contact you. Then use your conversation or your marketing copy to help prospects further define their problems or concerns. Do this well and they'll clearly see the need for your products and services. 2. Continue to Educate Prospects and Clients Clients buy from you when they know how you can help them.
That's why they initially contracted with you or bought your products and services. Once you've signed on a new client, don't assume that they understand the range of services or products you market. They may not even fully understand what they've bought. Use each contact to continue to educate your clients and help them understand the issues, problems and solutions relative to your area of expertise. For example if youre a financial advisor and you've been hired to help a client with their investments, you might ask them a question about their estate planning, tax situation, insurance policies or retirement plan and provide them with an idea they can use. Each time you do this your client will learn how limited their own knowledge is and understand more about why they need your assistance in additional areas. Instead of selling clients on additional services, educate them. You'll create a perception of need and increase sales. 3. Transform Client Satisfaction into Additional Sales Do you have clients and customers that appreciate your products and services? Dont wait until your contract is complete to tap the goodwill youve generated by helping them. Regularly ask them questions designed to get responses like, "I couldnt have done it without you", "Worth every penny", etc. Just after your clients have provided positive feedback is the perfect time to ask them a couple of questions to identify needs and to mention the solutions you provide. Once you've gone to all the effort to attract a new client don't walk away from the rest of their needs just because they haven't identified or clarified them yet. Educate your prospects and clients at every step of the way about the problems you solve and they'll understand why they need more of your products and services. You'll discover pockets of opportunity to help your clients and increase your revenue. 2005 In Mind Communications, LLC. All rights reserved. Beating Back the New Year's Bulge: Cheating Away Those Holiday Pounds
By Paul Rivas, M.D. It's January 2, the day of reckoning. You glance at a full-length mirror as you dress in the morning, and you don't like what you see. Before Thanksgiving, you were on your way to becoming a thinner, healthier you. Now, every canap, slice of cheesecake, and glass of wine you indulged in over the holidays seems to be laughing at you from its new-found perch in your belly, butt, and thighs. Of course, you tell yourself you're imagining things. You couldn't have gained all that much weight. Just to prove it, you tentatively, almost timidly, climb onto the bathroom scale, and allow yourself to peek down with one squinty eye. Don't scream and do NOT allow yourself to plunge into depression. That number is a minor setback on the road to having a slender, healthier body. You can get back on track and barely miss a step on your way to your weight loss goal. You can also learn a new way of eating, using principles from the Cheater's Diet, that will allow you to enjoy the holidays next year to their fullest without gaining a single extra pound around your middle. First, you're going to shock your metabolism back into action with a month of the "Four F's" plan. It won't be easy, but you'll love the results. After that, you'll ease your way into the regular Cheater's Diet plan, which allows you to eat all kinds of food that you thought, as a dieter, you would never be allowed to eat again. The "Four F's" are: Fish Fluids Fiber Frequent meals
Fish- is an excellent source of protein and healthful Omega-3 fats, both of which will help you to feel sated and cut your appetite. Try to eat fish at least three times a week. Cold water varieties like salmon, tuna, sardines, and herring, contain the highest amounts of Omega-3's. Fluids- are extremely important for weight loss. Not only does drinking water, tea, coffee, diet sodas, or even soup help to cleanse your body of toxins, but it also keeps the kidneys functioning properly. When the kidneys are out of whack, the liver takes over for them, which means it can't continue doing one of its other major jobsturning your fat into fuel. Drink at least 2 quarts (8 cups) of fluids a day, and if you're overweight, drink even more. Fiber- helps move food through your system more quickly, makes you feel full, and keeps your digestive tract healthy. For the purposes of the Four F's, fruit is the best source. Apples, pears, plums, strawberries, and prunes are all good sources. In addition to the servings described below, have at least one additional fruit serving at every main meal. Frequent meals- means eating three main meals a day with snacks in between. Never go more than two hours between meals Breakfast, lunch, and dinner should always consist of one serving of protein (eggs, fish, white poultry meat, or lean pork loin) and one of a complex carb, like a vegetable, legume, or whole grain. A serving size is about one quarter of dinner plate. Snacks can consist of a serving of fruits, vegetables, nonfat dairy products, nuts, legumes or any other no sugar/low fat food. So to recaplots of meals, lots of fiber, lots of fish, lots of fluids. Don't worry about the rate at which you're losing. An average of two pounds a week is very respectable, and three pounds should be your maximum. Any more than that and you'll be burning muscle instead of fat. Speaking of muscle. Eating is only half the picture. If you want to maintain the weight you lose, you need to perform some kind of physical activity. That doesn't necessarily mean formal exercise. Just get up and move every chance you get. Studies show that doing vigorous, day-to-day activities is far more important for maintaining a healthful weight than is a membership to the local health club. Here are some that really burn the fat: Washing and waxing a car Washing windows or floors Playing volleyball Playing touch football Gardening Walking Basketball (shooting baskets) Dancing fast (social) Pushing a lawnmower Raking leaves
Past the first hurdle After you've gone four weeks sticking strictly with the Four F's, you can begin to relax a little. How? Cheat on the weekends. Now, I know that the word "cheat" generally makes dieters a little nervous. It represents failure to many of them. But it doesn't have to. In fact, cheating can be your greatest tool in reaching success. Here's how. After being subjected to a strict regimen like the Four F's throughout the first month, your body begins to outsmart you and slightly slows down the rate at which it burns fat. If you suddenly give it more work to do by feeding it more calories, it speeds up again. Then, after two days, you go back to your strict regimen. The body is still going with all fires blazing. It will take awhile for it to realize the trick you've pulled. So because you've eaten more for a couple of days, you're now burning fat even faster! Doing this every weekend keeps the body in a state of playing perpetual catch-up. So cheat! From Saturday morning to Sunday evening, eat anything you like, with the exception of foods you're likely to binge on. You can have chocolate, hamburgers, whole grain bread, ice cream, cinnamon buns, wine, beer, strawberry shortcakeyou name it. Or you can just have a whole lot more of the healthful foods you've been eating since the New Year. Cheating has one other advantage that's hugely important in maintaining a healthful weightit keeps you from getting bored. The average person stays on a diet for about two months before giving up and going back to his or her old ways. Why? The tedium of restrictive diets. The Cheater's Diet restricts you from nothing. It simply puts you on a schedule, just like going to work five days a week and taking off for two. Cheating for life By the end of the second month, you will probably have reached the end of your patience with eating six meals a day. So don't. Go back to three meals a day, and allow yourself four servings per mealone or two of protein, two of fruits or vegetables, and one of whole grains or legumes. You can still have snacks every two hours if you like. By summertime, you're going to look amazing. And when the holidays come next year, just stick with the Cheater's Diet! Paul Rivas, M.D., author of The Cheater's Diet: The Medically Proven Way to Supercharge Weight Loss, has specialized in obesity for over a decade and has successfully treated over 15,000 patients. By Brian Winkels With the ever-increasing popularity of acupuncture as an alternative medicine, it's shouldn't be all that surprising to learn acupuncture clinics appear to be popping up in virtually every American city of any size. As a result, receiving treatment that will help restore good health is becoming more and more popular at acupuncture clinics. Acupuncture clinics are a great place for getting timely diagnosis, treatment and patient care. The patient receives individual care and their case can be discussed, studied and reviewed with a qualified acupuncturist. Appropriate acupuncture points and treatment techniques can be identified that will suit each individual patient. Chinese Herbal Medicines
In addition, some acupuncture clinics offer a variety of treatment options in addition to traditional acupuncture like Chinese herbal medicines. For those who are not sure of which is best being face to face with a staff member can really help in making an appropriate treatment decision. Acupuncture clinics also focus on treating other health issues like: menopausal symptoms (i.e. hot flashes and fatigue), PMS and heavy periods, gynecological problems such as period pain, endometriosis, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches and migraines, anxiety and panic attacks, depression, auto-immune conditions like lupus and a host of other ailments. When faced with a health condition that traditional modern medicine can't diagnose the next logical step many people are now turning too for help is an acupuncture clinic. All treatments are considered safe with virtually no known harmful side effects. One example of an acupuncture clinic is the Po Ji Tang in San Francisco. The Po Ji Tangs philosophy centers around complete health care. They believe and follow a holistic, preventive approach to pain relief and they offer a number of healthcare services in addition to acupuncture like: dietary and nutritional counseling, herbal therapy and traditional Chinese medicine is used to treat patients having a great number of different emotional, physical and psychological issues. More and more are turning to acupuncture clinics because they embrace the use of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs in combination with acupuncture, whose effectiveness is thus increased due to synergy. Unlike modern medicine, acupuncture clinics spend time learning the patient's background, lifestyle and habits before diagnosing and chalking out an effective treatment plan. To begin with, many patients receive treatments once a week which is gradually reduced as their health improves. All in all, going to acupuncture clinic should result getting professional treatment from a registered medical practitioner using time proven methods of natural healing without having to rely on drugs. Reactive Depression
By Milos Pesic Have you been feeling low lately? Always angry and easily get irritated than usual? Or, having trouble sleeping because of the unfortunate event that happens in your life? Well, it could be a sign of a certain type of depression. And as serious as depression issue, an immediate attention and care must be given to you. Depression can be of many different types and reactive depression is one of them. Reactive depression, which is sometimes called an adjustment disorder with depressed mood, is the most normally encountered type of mood swing and is an extension of the normal upset feeling following a sad event in someones life. Death of family member, friend or someone very close, or any significant loss such as work can be some of lifes event that can stir up overwhelming state of sadness. Fortunately, this type of depression is not actually severe, due to the fact that depressive person may be relieved when engaged back in particular interests. Besides, any blue moods can always be remedied if you get diversions that are of your interests, right? Once you have gain control of your life again, you are good to go back to your routine again, like work, family obligations, and social life. Reactive depression is only used to categorize mild to moderate depression, following a stressful event. Most of the times, a depressive person will feel low, frequently angry and irritable, and seem lost in thoughts as the result of an unfortunate episode in life and have difficult sleeping. However, the depressive symptoms relative to reactive depression should be able to be cured and gone within six months following the end of the stress that caused the reaction. There is an exemption to the rule, though. Not all depressive individuals are capable of moving on easily. There are depression suffers whose condition continue over a long period of time, instead of experiencing the condition as a single event. Reactive depression symptoms are similar to other types of depression; therefore the possible recommended treatment will still be the same as well. Cognitive-behavioral therapy and /or interpersonal therapy are still effective in treating this type of depression. Because of the relationship between the symptoms and a specific stressor, the focus is on resolving the problem that created the stress. For example, if your job is responsible for your depression, then you might consider changing jobs, which could be the most effective solution of your problem. Contrary to what many may believe, there is, almost always, a solution to any problem. Usually, people suffering from reactive depression as reaction to psychosocial stressors thought that theres no existing solution to their predicament, when, in fact, there is. In the case of depression, finding or developing a logical solution to overcome your illness in an important part of the process of recovery. No Time for 30 Minutes of Weight Loss?
By Janice Elizabeth Small What's the number one excuse people make for not fitting exercise into their weight loss program? "I don't have time!" Yet to get fitter and help a little with your weight loss efforts you only need three sessions a week of about 30 minutes (a mere 90 minutes out of the 10,000 or so you have available). When you look at it more closely, however, the main problem seems to be that taking exercise can soak up a lot more time in practice. There's the time needed to get all your things together, the time to drive to the gym, the time to shower and the time to get home again - and all that on top of your 30 minutes workout time. It can end up cutting into your whole day or evening. No wonder we tend to think that we're just too busy these days to make exercise part of our every day lives and weight loss efforts. If you have a hectic lifestyle then it's hard to see where the time will come from. If you can't seem to find any time to exercise you can do quite a lot to help your general health and fitness and burn some calories by being more active during the course of your day. Follow all the tips about using the restroom which is furthest from your desk, taking the stairs rather than the elevator and parking as far away from the front door as you can. But if you want to make a significant change to your fitness levels and increase the calories you burn, you will need some longer exercise sessions and it's worth looking for ways to fit that into your schedule. So how do you fit 30 minutes of exercise into a busy lifestyle? 1. Use Your Lunchtime If you can get away from your work for at least 30 minutes you can raise your heart levels and burn some calories by going for a brisk walk at midday and still have time to eat lunch at your desk. On some days, if there's a gym close to your office, you could try a short session there. Instead of using the aerobic equipment head for the toning machines and work on a different part of your body each day. You'll firm up without breaking too much of a sweat (and probably won't need to shower). Whatever exercise you take you'll return to work completely refreshed and ready to hit the road running - well ahead of your co-workers who will be suffering a post lunch slump. 2. Take the Kids If you find it hard to exercise because you have children, get them involved. Walk them in the stroller if they are young enough or take them to the park and run about with them - you have probably forgotten how much energy children use in play and the fresh air will be good for all of you. It really doesn't matter what the weather is like (try puddle-jumping in the rain!) as long as you wear the right clothes and keep to shady areas and wear sunscreen if it's hot. Anything that gets you all moving and having fun will help. If that does not give you a hard enough workout (or your kids are beyond puddle-jumping) try and arrange a babysitter three times a week so that you can fit in the exercise you need for your own well-being. You can even swap with another mom if you can't afford to pay for this. 3. Walk don't Drive See every shopping trip or visit to the bank as an opportunity for getting more exercise and walk there if you can. This makes every errand a way of killing off two birds with one stone - you fit in some exercise at the same time as ticking something off your "to do" list. Just 15 minutes there and back of brisk walking and you have clocked up your 30 minutes. Plus it's amazing how many ideas and solutions come to you while you are walking - it may turn out to be the most productive part of your day. 4. Drop In on Your Way Save time by combining getting ready for work or for a night out with a session at the gym. Drop into the gym in the morning before work or on your way for a night on the town and use your gym's facilities afterwards to get ready. Take your work or party clothes to the gym and after your shower you can do your hair and make-up there. And you'll feel great too. 5. Start Early The earlier in the day you plan an exercise session the easier it is to fit in. If you work out first thing in the morning you get it over with before life has time to get in the way. So get your workout clothes ready the night before, set your alarm and get it done before the rest of the family are up and about. You'll feel virtuous all day. You don't even have to leave your house if you don't want to - there are so many good exercise DVDs around and there's even enough easy-to-store exercise equipment now available for a full body workout at home.
