There's No Such Thing as Work-Life Balance

By Annemarie Segaric It seems everyone around me is working longer and longer hours. My husband used to have the occasional early morning conference call when he needed to be in by 7am. Now that seems to be the norm everyday. My brother is on the first train into Grand Central each day and can usually be reached at his desk by 6:15am. And a recent New York Times article talked about the increase in commuter train ridership as employees are getting to work earlier and earlier so as to be able to work with colleagues and clients in Asia who are ending their day just as some of us are waking up! So where does that leave any room for you? How can you fit in changes to your career when you can barely make it to the gym, to your child's recital, to your in-law's house for dinner, or your friend's big birthday bash. Not to mention getting some real sleep and eating a half decent meal. Well, there's a way to work things out and not feel so crazed and it doesn't mean learning how to balance everything. First, identify your priorities. According to the book, Coming Up for Air by Beth Sawi, figure out the five things that matter most to you. Your list might look like this: health, family, career fulfillment, friends, financial stability. It doesn't matter what is on your list just as long as they are truly your absolute, must-have priorities. Second, evaluate what is in your life right now and see how it matches up to your stated priorities. You'd be surprised by how much time you're spending on things, that when it comes down to it, you really don't care that much about. Let go of the guilt about what you think you should be doing and instead live in integrity and align yourself with your priorities. Finally, stay in the moment with whatever it is that you're doing at the time. If family time is one of your priorities then make sure that you're there with your family when you're physically present. Liz Lange, president of Liz Lange Maternity, says in the April/May issue of Pink Magazine, "Before I would be half playing with my kids, half checking my Blackberry. But now I'm down on the floor with them and everything works much better." Replace the word "balance" with "choice" and see that you need to choose your priorities and then choose to do those things that support your priorities. You're not supposed to balance it all. You're supposed to pick and choose and when you do, be really engaged and fully drinking in the beauty of the moment. Copyright 2006. Want to reprint this article? Absolutely. Bachelor Degree - Education

By Michael Russell A bachelor degree in education, at least in the United States, is one of the most convoluted degrees you can possibly want to get. Unlike other bachelor degrees, where the criteria are pretty much up to the school itself, an education bachelor degree is actually controlled by the state. And to complicate matters, these requirements differ from state to state. So somebody living in New York may have different requirements from somebody living in New Jersey. Therefore, it is imperative that a person thinking about getting a bachelor degree in education carefully examine what those requirements are before jumping in with both feet. In this article we're going to cover some of the possible programs, depending again on where you live. In some states to get a bachelor degree in education you need to simply take a certain number of education courses depending on what level of education you want to teach. Yes, there are levels. You just don't get a degree and then apply for a job at any school. There is elementary education, which is K through 8. There is secondary education, which is K through 12. In some states, you can get a degree that is only for teaching high school kids. So the first thing you want to decide is what level of school you want to teach. You will then have to take certain education courses to fulfill those requirements. Then, there are some states that totally throw a monkey wrench into this whole equation. In those states you can't major in education. No, that's not a misprint. You can't get a bachelor degree in education. You have to get a degree in the specialty that you want to teach, such as math or history or science or whatever. What you then do is get what they call a minor in education so that you are certified to teach in a school. If it sounds confusing, imagine how confusing it is for the kids who want to become teachers. Of course, in addition to the above, there are the other courses that you have to take in order to complete your bachelor degree. This also changes from state to state. For example, in the states where a person can major in education, the courses that the person has to take to fill out the rest of the curriculum are the subjects that the person wants to concentrate on while they are teaching. In other words, if a person wants to be a math teacher, even though they are majoring in education, they now have to take a certain number of math credits to get what they call "certified" by the state. And this changes from state to state. So make sure you find out how many credits you need for that math certification before you make your schedule. In the states where you major in math and minor in education, that part is taken care of and all that's left is to fill your schedule with the required number of education courses and electives. Yes, getting a bachelor degree in education is not like any other degree. No wonder teachers are so bum fuzzled. Michael Russell Your Independent Bachelor Degree guide. Weight Loss Tip - The Chopstick Method

By John Davenport The weight loss process can be accelerated by several simple tips. One of them involves chopsticks, specifically, eating with them. Most people eat when they're hungry or can even develop a huge hunger when food is placed before them. Eating when you're hungry can be very bad for you. Why? Because when we're hungry we tend to eat everything very quickly, devouring whatever is on our plate in no time. The problem is that it takes our body awhile to realize that it has been fed and to stop sending out hunger signals. Because we continue to feel hungry, we end up eating more than we should and pack on the extra pounds. Another thing that happens when we eat too much too quickly is that our body is stuffed and has difficulty to digest our food as efficiently as it should. More of our food goes undigested, we turn more calories into fat tissue and we even feel so tired that there's no chance of any physical activity that evening. A cool way to avoid this problem is eating with chopsticks. First, cut your food into small pieces, then eat them with chopsticks. Unless you're a chopstick expert, you'll eat your food more slowly, you'll finish your portion feeling that you had all that you need and won't have any cravings left. You'll digest your food better and have more energy for exercising. I know it can become a little frustrating, but give it a try. Eating slowly even makes the food taste better. Creating A Happy Marriage

By Beth Young This includes an understanding between two people that have a mutual agreement and respect for one another to make a happy life and family together. A majority of arguments in relationships are disagreements on when and how to discipline children. Remember, your spouse is your partner, you should both have an equal say so. Develop a plan together and follow through with it. Never does anything that you know will upset your partner. Take your agreement seriously and they will appreciate you for it. Once you come to an agreement you will also find that there is more trust, which is always a huge defining thing in a marriage. If you work together on a happy marriage a happy family will follow. When you live with somebody and you have decided to share your life with somebody, you find things about that person that weren't there before. As much as we like to believe that we are always right, we aren't. Finding a common way of communicating without losing control of the conversation is probably the hardest part. You want to avoid hurting feelings without holding back. This is simple; all you have to do is make an agreement that you will let each other have a chance to speak. Don't speak at all until your spouse is done speaking. It sounds harder than it is. Remember, never shout, it almost always escalates in to something that could have been solved speaking in your regular voices. When people say things they regret it is always hard to face that person because you know that you hurt them. Imagine doing this to someone you love so much. A common mistake couples make is telling their partner to leave in an argument. Almost nobody means this when they say it, so it's interesting that these are the choice of words we use in such an uncomfortable situation. When one person leaves in an argument, what ends up happening? The conversation is not over and you will have to pick up where you left off on an argument that was never finished. This can be ongoing and very painful but easily avoided. Your Family should be the most important thing in your life and you should treat it that way. Your children should never feel neglected and they should never have to feel like you put your job or friends first. Your children are also mirrors of yourselves, they represent either good or bad parenting. Believe me people know when they see a child that is a result of bad parenting. Children are so easily influence by the things you say or do, positive or negative. When you argue you should never do it around or in front of your children. A lot of mistakes parents make are arguing in front of teenagers. They justify it by thinking the children are old enough to be exposed to that kind of behavior. This can affect their schooling or social life and it is not healthy at all. You should dedicate one night a week were you spend time together. Not only will this start a family tradition your children will remember and pass on to their own kids, it also keeps your family connected. Alternative Health Practitioner, How to Pick the Perfect Help for You

By Doris Jeanette Therapists, physicians, acupuncturists, massage therapists, body workers and energy workers need to be interviewed and checked out just like your roofer! I don't know about you but finding a good roofer is might-near-impossible. Psychological outcome research has shown that half of the therapists make us better and the other half makes us worse. This means we need to choose wisely. You do not need to continue to pay someone if you are not making dynamic progress toward your goals. If the roofer does not fix your roof you do not continue to pay him money. The outcome psychological research shows that the technique does not matter, the therapist is the important factor. If he or she is open, loving, caring then he or she can help you feel better. If they are uptight and nervous, they will make you uptight and nervous. I would think that this applies to all holistic practitioners and not just psychologists. As sensitive people we definitely need to feel safe and secure with any person we are working with. We have a responsibility and right to check therapists, physicians, massage therapists, acupuncturists, body workers and energy workers out very carefully before we put ourselves in their office. It is our responsibility as clients and consumers to pick and choose based on our own needs and desires. Even if you get a good recommendation about a person, check them out by calling them up and interviewing them. Your checklist:
1-What does his or her voice sound like? It is inviting, warm, loving?
2-How accepting are they toward you? Are they open or judgmental?
3-Do they relate equally to you? If not, keep checking around until you find someone that respects you and acknowledges your strengths.
4-How do you feel after talking with them on the phone? Do you feel comfortable? Do you feel hopeful? Did they rush you? If so, then they are anxious, forget them. If they pass the phone test. Then set up an appointment and continue to check for the above things in person. If they pass the first psychology session test then it is up to you to be open and trust them enough to let them help you. Therapists and practitioners are not perfect, they make mistakes, just like everyone else. The best ones don't pretend to be perfect, they know they are human. What you want to look for during your sessions: 1- How present are they? Do they really listen to you and receive you?
2-How relaxed are they are in their body? Are they breathing?
3-How secure do they seem to be when you get scared, frightened or anxious? If you scare them, they cannot help you.
4-Do they had the information and knowledge to help you calm down your nervous system?
5- Do they know what they are doing?
6-Do you usually feel better and more hopeful after each session?
7-Do they let you express your deepest desires and fears without questioning you? Remember, it is up to you, the client, to pick and choose someone who is capable and loving. When you decide that someone is not good for you, you can leave at any time for any reason. Do not feel guilty and take care of the therapist. You are paying them for a service and they need to deliver. For more about how to live a guilt free life listen to the audio tapes series, A Natural Process for Opening the Heart, over and over again. Dr. Jeanette explains the difference in energy between real feelings and mental judgments that cause you to feel bad and guilty. Remember you do not owe your physician or therapist anything. They need to help you grow and become healthy or you need to find someone who can. If you really want to change and grow, pick a therapist who will teach you how to let go of judgmental energy so that you can grow up and achieve self esteem. Want To Strengthen Your Relationship

By Yvonne Chase Open your mouth. What do I mean? Talk say whats on your mind. Walking around with a chip on your shoulder will not strengthen your relationship. It will only create more distance between you and your mate. If you cant find the right words to say, write a letter. You may think that not saying something will make the issue or problem go away it wont. What it will do is build resentment towards your mate and open up the door for other problems to crawl in. Zip it. You must think Im nuts telling you to talk and now Im telling you to zip it. What I mean is this after you have said your piece, listen with your heart for understanding instead of gathering information to be used as ammunition. Do your best to not interrupt while your mate is speaking. Use tact. Say whats on your mind honestly and with as much love, kindness, respect and consideration. Remove criticism, contempt and defensiveness from your delivery. In your reply, use words like, So what I hear you saying is or If I heard you correctly, what you mean is this Statements like these let your mate know that you care. Fix it. Repair any damage done in an argument immediately. If youve said something you know you shouldnt have said, apologize today not tomorrow and never go to sleep without saying I love you. There is no guarantee that you will wake up. Let it flow. Dont expect conflict to be resolved once and for all. Allow for continued discussion. Effective communication takes time. Trial and error is necessary in order to become a master at any skill. The same holds true for great communication. Take a break. If the disagreement begins and continues in a harsh way, take a break and continue later. Little is accomplished with two hot heads in the room. Better results are guaranteed when you are calm, cool and collected. Own up. Im a huge fan of self-responsibility. Stop blaming your mate and acknowledge your responsibility in whats causing troubles in your relationship. If you screwed up and know you are dead wrong for what you did or said, own up! When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece. Coach Yvonne Chase

Relationship Tid Bits (Cold Feet Part 1)

By Dale Mazurek Ok now you have asked her to marry you. Shes the greatest girl in the world and there is no one you would rather be with. Youre at the football field playing some touch football with your buddies. You hear your cell phone ring and guess what? Its the girl of your dreams and she is panicking on the other end. You are immediately scared that someone has been hurt or something but no ones been hurt. Your fianc called you in a panic, interrupted you just to tell you that the caterer called telling her that chicken wouldnt be available for the main course and that they would have to choose between beef or salmon. You cant believe she called you for this and to make matters worse she is going off the deep end because of something so trivial. You tell her that you guys will discuss it when you get home later and you hang up and head back out to the field. Now youre back on the field and all of a sudden the back of your neck feels sore, you feel a little dizzy, your palms start sweating. You know theres something wrong. You think you might be having a heart attack or something. You tell one of your buddies and he immediately starts laughing. Youre angry because he doesnt seem concerned at all. You want to kill him but he stops you and tells you that he heard your conversation. Hes still laughing when he tells you that the only thing wrong is that you have cold feet You know you love her, you asked her to marry you but now youre second guessing yourself. Not because you dont love her but because you are scared out of your pants. You have so many questions that you cant answer. Will I be a good husband, do I want kids, will I be a good dad, will I be a good provider, can I afford to be married? Now your head starts spinning again. Thats right; you have cold feet. Cold feet afflicts men more than women in the weeks and months prior to getting married. For the most part the couples usually work it out and just have a good laugh about it later. However there is the rare occurrence when cold feet stops the wedding all together because one of the partners decides he or she just cant handle it. It all seems funny but cold feet can be very serious in the outcome of a persons life. Lots of money spent and wasted not to mention the feelings of the person that gets left standing at the altar. Dale Mazurek is an expert article writer. When it comes to relationships he has been married twenty years so he feels he has lots to offer in the relationship field. Easy, Long Lost Ways to Create Family Unity and Fun

By MaryLou Bailey Are you sick and tired of TV being your first (and maybe only) form of entertainment for your family? Wouldnt it be great to have fun and interact instead of just staring at a box? Fortunately youve come to the right place for 8 long lost, easy and fun, suggestions for family activity that can be done virtually anywhere in the world. So get up off the couch and do these things on a regular basis: 1. On the boardwalk No matter where you are, or where you live, there is somewhere you can take a walk or a hike. Get out of the house and see your neighborhood, your town, the fields or mountains around you. Walking, talking, and seeing together is a great way to have fun and get some fresh air. 2. Water world Most kids love water, and frankly, parents probably ought to get back in touch with it. Grab your swimming suits and go to the city pool, the YMCA, the river, the lake, or an open downtown fountain. For fun right at home, turn on the sprinklers in the yard or grab the hose and have a good old-fashioned water fight. 3. Yards of fun If the weather is nice, yard games are a great way to play together, have fun, and even develop new skills. Croquet, badminton, bocci, soccer, volleyball, or lawn bowling are great ways to bring back some good old days to your family. Try playing the outdoor games you loved as kid and see that your kids will love them too. Try Kick-the-can, Red Light Green Light, Mother May I, Statues, etc. (For rules for these, and other, games ask for them through the contact page at marylougames.com) 4. Reading Team One of our familys favorite things to do over the years has been to read aloud together. Its so fun to get a book that everyone will enjoy and just sit down and listen together. Pick someone who enjoys reading and can give expression and voice to the people in the book. Weve read both fiction and non-fiction. We read in the car while traveling, in the evening at bedtime, on Sunday afternoons. Usually none of us want to put the book down, and the kids beg for one more chapter. If youve never done this before just pick a good book and start with just one chapter. Heres a hint: Always stop when youre in the middle of the excitement so they keep wanting more. 5. Project fun How about starting a project that the whole family can help work on? When I was a kid my dad decided we were going to build a canoe. He got plans at the library and most evenings we were out in the garage working on it together. We used it for years on the lakes near our home. A lot of wonderful memories are tied to that canoe. Think of something the whole family can pitch in on and do together and then enjoy together later on. If building would not be interesting to your family try other options--design clothes, start a business, write books, make scrapbooks, cook together, paint, plant a garden, build model airplanes, do puzzles, etc. 6. Schools out Even when school is out, learning is in. Have each member of the family write down some things they would like to learn to do. Compare lists and find something that everyone would be willing to learn. Then search out resources in your community to learn what youve decided. How about learning to dance, to sculpt, to play musical instruments, etc. Learning is fun. 7. Meeting of the board Board games and card games are so readily available and really are fun in a box. There are so many to choose from that you can find one or two that your family can enjoy together. We play games frequently on Sunday evenings, and during the summer, board games are a regular part of the fun. Board games also teach following the rules, cooperation, compassion, and creative thinking. 8. Friends and family Consider the old practice of visiting friends and family members. If your kids groan at this suggestion start with a visit to a friend or relative that also includes a barbecue, a movie night, or treats. Make the visits fun and over time the idea of visiting people wont seem so strange to the kids. Make sure that (eventually) you are visiting people of many ages. Kids can actually find older people to be very interesting. But start with what is familiar and fun until they are visiting pros. There you have it, 8 long lost ways to get off the couch, create fun for your family, and build unity with the ones you love. Having fun together makes life better! Organize Your Grocery Shopping - Save Time and Trips

By Randi Kuhne Making a master grocery list takes a little time initially, but youll save lots more time while preparing your weekly shopping list, while shopping (you wont have to run back to aisle 2 for something you missed), and most of all by avoiding extra trips to the store for things you forgot! When I was a teenager we used to do this with pen and paper. Doing it in your computer is much better. You can print out a new copy each week, and easily rearrange your list every few years when your grocery store rearranges everything. Heres how to create your master list: 1) Make a staples list. Include every thing you normally want to keep on hand. List everything you buy at the grocery store, food and non-food. 2) Get a printout of the grocery store products by aisle. If they dont have one, write your own list. You dont need to include every item, just the general sections, in the order in which you normally go through the store. For example: Aisle 1: dairy, eggs, deli; Aisle 2: canned vegetables and beans, imported foods; Aisle 3: paper towels, napkins, cleaning products...etc. (If you get something the store keeps in an unusual place be sure to put it on this list even if you dont get it every week.) 3) Rearrange your staples list in the order of the sections in the grocery store. (If you live in a two story house, make a separate staples list for upstairs, and write this list first each week. Its probably shorter, and easy to incorporate these items as you make your big list.) 4) Print a copy and put it in your kitchen. This will be your master list. Or print several at a time and check off the items you need each week, and toss the list when done. 5) When its time to make your grocery list for the week, get your master list and check each item to see if you need more. If you do, put it on your written list as you normally would. Be sure to include ingredients for any recipes / menus youre planning for the week. When youre done, youve checked everything youre likely to need, and your list is in the same order as the store! Losing Stomach Fat-Beyond The Lies

By D.G. Gordon One of the great lasting myths of fat loss is that we can lose fat in specific spots with specific exercises while the fat in other areas goes 'undisturbed'. Losing stomach fat is perhaps the most common problem especially for men so it is the most vulnerable to such mythologizing. Why does the myth of losing stomach fat with such spot training exist? Because for every common problem there is an entrepreneur who declares a solution to make money from it even if that solution has no basis in reality. The first thing to know is that there is a genetic component to fat storage. We are all predisposed to gaining fat in certain areas of the body before others. If youre a female, you may notice your particular trouble spots as being in the thighs, hips, and arms. If youre a male, youre most likely having problems in the stomach and the love handles (sides of the waist). The fact is that the first place that you store fat is going to be the last place where the fat will come off. No exercises supposedly designed for losing stomach fat, or popular diet plan, will change that. The best thing I can do for you is inform you of what's required in terms of losing fat throughout the body, preventing you from futile attempts to lose stomach fat as you mess around with unproven theories. The best thing you can do for yourself is not waste your time (as millions have done) by spending your days doing crunches in a vain attempt to lose fat in your stomach and love handles. Dont get me wrong: doing crunches is not a bad thing; it helps build muscle in that area and is one step in burning calories. But those muscles are not going to be visible if youre not aggressively burning the fat covering them. Losing stomach fat will require some form of aerobic/cardio exercise. This is because any kind of exercise that you do will burn glycogen (carbohydrates stored in your body) first, before the fat gets burned as energy. This means that you need to exercise for a certain period of time with an adequate level of intensity before the fat starts to burn in your body. You need to be even more persistent to get beyond the easier parts of the body towards a spot like the stomach where the fat storages occur first. This means that if you were willing and able to do crunches continuously for at least 30 minutes each day, 4 or 5 days a week, you might begin losing stomach fat and eventually see the results youre looking for. But youre probably neither willing nor able to do this, nor do you need to. So, what does need to be done towards losing unwanted stomach fat? In order to answer that question, lets take a look at what those who are most successful at losing fat do to go from dangerously overweight to fabulously lean: A schedule of aerobic exercise at least 3 days a week, in at least 30 minute installments; A schedule of weight training at least 2 days a week, in at least 20 minute installments; A metabolism-boosting, reduced calorie diet that includes adequate amounts of complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, and unsaturated fats (ideally spread out over 5 or 6 meals a day); About 15 20% fewer calories consumed than you do right now to maintain your present weight; A written plan that keeps you from veering off course or quitting altogether like the vast majority do. This may seem like a lot. But, as mentioned, stomach fat is the most stubborn of all body fat to lose meaning that losing stomach fat requires an equally stubborn effort to match it. Losing stomach fat does not have to be an unpleasant chore, however. You can always find ways to adjust your lifestyle to achieve great results while not feeling completely deprived. Some things you can do for yourself to customize the above steps include: Doing effective exercise that you enjoy. There are a wide range of aerobic exercises that you can do towards losing stomach fat, and having several choices allows you to find the best one for you. They include jogging, spinning, elliptical training, rowing, stair-climbing, and using a cross-country ski machine. With weights, you can use barbells and dumbbells for a combination of lunges, presses, squats, rows, etc. Some will challenge and stimulate you, some wont. The point is that all of these will be effective, so you can find your own combination.Discovering healthy foods that also satisfy taste. In order to lose stomach fat, you need to lower calories, period. You also need to minimize intake of saturated fats and simple carbohydrates, and take in lean proteins instead of getting the majority of your protein from such foods as fatty meats. You can substitute high-calorie foods with moderate portions of things like grilled chicken, turkey, broiled fish, nuts, fruit, vegetables, baked chips, yogurt and other low-fat dairy.Stack the spice rack. Spices are a great way to add flavor to food without adding calories as you do when you fry it. You can also purchase things like Molly McButter butter and cheese flavored sprinkles to add these flavors to foods without adding fat. Remember that high fat condiments can often turn a healthy food into one that takes you well over your calorie threshold. The question you need to ask yourself now is whether youre willing to spend your time doing things the right way (the way people who get real results do, as described above), or follow the myths regarding losing stomach fat, which will bring you little or no results and waste the most precious resource we all have our time. Cushions Truly Make the Chair

By Jane Patrone While your outdoor furniture may be beautifully crafted out of iron or wood, beauty is not its only purpose. First and foremost, furniture must be comfortable and thats where cushions come into the picture. The cushions you choose for your outdoor furniture should provide the combination of both support and comfort that creates an ideal place to sit. If you are shopping for cushions to complete an outdoor dining set, there are several factors to consider. Custom-made cushions will be able meet all of your exacting specifications. Keep in mind the following questions: Do you want the cushion to cover the seat only, or the seat and the back of the chair? Do you want the cushions to include ties to keep them in place? And, what are the precise dimensions of your chairs? To find the precise dimensions, its a good idea to consult the manufacturer. Now comes the fun part Fabric! You will find endless varieties of outdoor fabrics, but I recommend Sunbrella fabric. In my opinion, it is the superior outdoor fabric for the following reasons: Sunbrella fabric resists damage from mildew, chlorine and sunlight. These highly breathable fabrics allow cushions to dry quickly when stood on edge. Coated with a Teflon soil-and-stain-resistant finish, Sunbrella fabrics are easily cleaned. The color and pattern you choose for your outdoor cushions are a matter of personal style, but I would suggest choosing a fabric that coordinates with the style and personality of your home and garden decor. As you survey the elements of your garden against the backdrop of your house, imagine a linear fabric as opposed to a free-flowing floral. Which would complement the setting best? Sunbrella offers an extensive line of fabric patters and styles. As you think through all the possibilities of your outdoor living area, remember the most important part is to have fun!
